Overdose Program

Through a grant from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) is working with local and state partners to assist with drug overdose and prevention efforts. Local partners from each of the nine SWNPHD counties meet monthly to discuss plans and activities that will address issues identified during strategic planning sessions held last year. Committee members include healthcare, emergency management services (EMS), behavioral health, social services, law enforcement, and schools. This committee is working on several issues including data gathering, training and education, stigma, and harm reduction.

Two national agencies, The Opioid Response Network (ORN) and C4 Innovations, are assisting SWNPHD and local efforts with a project directed toward inmates. The project seeks to provide individuals with mind-body mental health support during incarceration and upon release that will give them positive strategies to address common problems leading to their addiction. Local jails and corrections staff are working with SWNPHD and local counselors to provide this and other resources.

Future activities include seeking other funding sources, developing a peer support network, collecting more robust data, and increasing local resources. The Nebraska Medical Association has been working with SWNPHD, ORN, and C4 with finding additional grant money and providing guidance on projects and activities already in place.

Overdose Community Stakeholder Survery Results-2023

With this survey we are looking for barriers to substance use disorder (SUD) treatment in our community. We are asking for input from anyone who works for employers that serve their community in the southwest Nebraska area, and especially anyone who interacts with individuals with SUD.
