Pool Cool

Skin Cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States Protection from the sun’s rays could prevent about 90% of all skin cancer cases. Youth are most at risk for overexposure to the sun’s rays since they spend the most time outdoors.

Our goal with the Pool Cool program is to increase awareness and promote sun protection behavior and practices among our districts pool staff and patrons.  This is accomplished through a combination of education for children and staff, interactive activities for children and parents, and environmental changes at the pool.

Over-exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is thought to be the primary cause of skin cancer. Health experts recommend the following precautions:

    • Avoid peak sunlight hours when the suns rays are most intense-10 am -4 pm
    • Wear protective clothing, including a wide brim hat, during long periods of sun exposure.
    • Wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays for the best protection.
    • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. Apply 30 min before going outdoors and re-apply every two hours, especially after swimming.
    • No shadow…seek shade! If your shadow is shorter than you are, the damaging rays of the sun are at their strongest.
